It's almost time for summer vacation again for many of us in the Northern Hemisphere (not sure about you aussies). That means it's time for the second triathlon series!
I'd like to do a few things differently this season. And I'd like your opinions on a few things.
Please respond to the questions below (you can number your answers in your response).
1. To date, we've only done species with red X's on the Great Checklist. Should we incorporate species with yellow exclamation points, too? These are species which have not been done specifically but generically, e.g. even though Spinosaurus has been done before, no one has done Spinosaurus marrocanus, so it's not checked off. If we went this route, you'd be more likely to see a more familiar species in the triathlon in the future (though not guaranteed, of course).
2. One problem that seems to occur is that folks forget about the contest because the deadline is too far away, or they don't have enough time to work on the project because it's too close. What's a good time allotment, two weeks? One week? A month?
3. (optional)
Traditionally, a triathlon in athletics has five parts:
a) running
b) getting into the water
c) swimming
d) getting on your bike
e) cycling
It might not be that order, but that's the general idea. I'd like to make the triathlon's format something more like that. In the past, we've done both the fossil and living representation for two species and the living representation of the other species, covering three species and totaling five entries per entrant, and the scores from all five creations were averaged out for each entrant. I'd love to hear your ideas as to how we can make the second and fourth entries for each triathlon simpler than the first, third, and fifth. So if you could, suggest a format that would be like this:
a) challenge
b) easy
c) challenge
d) easy
e) challenge
I've got a great selection of fossil creatures coming up...I hope we have a good turnout this year!
